Berms and Babies

The flooding continues - and will throughout the summer. It is so odd - this type of flooding. There was warning time for berm, levee, and sea wall building. Most people - if able to afford to do so - have moved their belongings and moved their families, temporarily, to higher ground...but the waiting for damage continues.

This isn't a flood like the wall of water that usually comes to mind. This is an agonizingly slow seepage of the Missouri River and all it's confluences. We just keep watching the width expand and swallow up anything in it's path, blurring and marring the landscape. The speed of the river is estimated to be twice it's normal flow, uprooting whole trees and disconnecting docks, making its normally dangerous current even more treacherous.

The river gives new meaning to 'water slide' at a local park.

Up river, in South Dakota, two of the six dams have reached their all-time release record of 150,000 cubic feet per second (approx. 1,112,000 US liquid gallons per second). This peaked outpouring of water will continue through mid August. It's any one's guess how long it will be before things get back to '"normal". Here are a few pictures taken from my home town, situated on the tri-state area of Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota.

Oh Baby!

As I mentioned in my previous post the Missouri River is exceeding its banks for hundreds of miles up and down stream from my home town of Sioux City, IA. I'm inserting a few pictures of the flooding that is occurring in my hometown and surrounding areas. The devastation will continue down the course of the Missouri. As you can see in the images below what appear to be bushes are really tree tops surrounded by the Missouri River. (Photos by Christine McAvoy). According to the local meteriologist the haze is a result of the fires currently burning in Arizona.

Life, Lemons, and Levees

What a horrific last few days this has been. My hometown of Sioux City, IA is on the brink of a massive flood. My home is in no danger of Missouri River water but there are hundreds of people packing and moving. Where do you move if you have no family in the area? Where do you store a lifetime of 'stuff'? How do you start over with a mortgage that you will still owe even though your home will be swept away downstream? How much kindness and generosity of others can you experience in the span of a week without shedding a few tears?

The 'experts' are anticipating the river to crest at 35 feet. Thirty-five feet over the banks...that is nearly unimaginable. I'm not sure what the lemonade side of this flood would be...that people have had ample warning, that we've had sunshine in the wave of people evacuating their homes, that even with this impending devastation people are resilient and are keeping their hopes alive along with their sense of humor.

I will be putting in minimal Bubble time for awhile. I have friends to try to help. That will be more theraputic than even my cherished card making time.

Shoe-Shoe Don't Bother Me

Yeah! Time in the bubble. I decided to get busy and work ahead on the request I know will be coming from Jennifer for blingy cards to give as gifts at Christmas. She loves all things bling so I 'kicked' off her yet to come request for cards with this strappy, sassy, party-ready shoe.

While I will admit to hating most shopping I do enjoy shopping for shoes. This enjoyment does have an exclusion - shopping for shoes with my husband (AKA Poppy - the name given him by granddaughter Bailey) and especially when the shopping extravaganza is for FOR my husband. We walk into a large DSW - he astutely notes that there are mostly women shopping and he ingeniously notes that the store is mostly filled with women's shoes. DUH...HELLO....men have but two choices in dress shoes - brown or black, tie or slip-on. Of course there is only ONE aisle of men's shoes!

He takes off his 'weekend' shoes (destined soon for the garbage can) and I see not only thick white gym socks - I'm horrified to see that one of them has a toe peaking through. We are shopping for dress shoes not sneakers! He actually looked stunned when I admonished him about not wearing dress weight socks. He said, "Well these are thin...in places." Did I really need to explain to him that THIN socks (holes in the toes) does not mean the same as thin dress socks? REALLY! What a dork! Such an adorable duffus he is.

If this were a happenstance shoe shopping event I might not be so dismayed - but we got in the car for the express purpose of Poppy Shoe Shopping. Luckily the shoe store sells all types of socks. How very savvy of them to have socks in stock! He not only got a new pair of shoes but new dress socks. The experience was so exasperating I finally left him in the confident shopping skills of our daughter. As they took care of the hunt of the shoe...I trekked down the walk to Archiver's located conveniently next to the shoe store. I was happy to excuse myself from their father-daughter time and they were happy to be rid of me. It was a win-win for all!

Briar Cliff University graduation was Saturday. (A day filled with pomp, circumstances, hugs, photos, fears, tears, and laughter - I loved every moment of it.) Move off campus day was Saturday. (Yes it is time for ALL the little darlin's to move back home for the summer - we need time to grow to miss them...) Daughter Amy was home for a weekend visit. (Love Amy time - no matter where it is located - but especially love it when she is home and "in the bosom" as she calls it.)

Kickin' It In Heels

The college kids that came over for hot dogs and movie night last week had a great time as did I. My task of getting them to watch one of my favorite movies is complete. None of them had ever seen it before. They loved The Bird Cage and laughed all the way through it. The evening started with a game of dodge ball in the back yard. Needless to say - I was the cheering photographer not a participant!

News Flash: I HATE Being HOT!

I finally made it back to my blog! This is a record for me not yakking it up and not having card making time! Too many end of the school year events to attend! Too many really bad re'sumes to review! Too many panicking seniors looking for jobs!

Six of 'my regular peeps' (students who frequent my office) are coming over for hot dogs and movie night tonight. They are all bringing side dishes and who knows what else. We are going to watch The Bird Cage which none of the students have ever seen. It is a classic in my book!

This should be fun...my family room has no furniture (long story)...(but they're kids...right?...they are used to sharing an 10' x 11' DORM room...PLUS my air conditioning is not working which they are ALSO used to as their dorms are not air conditioned...barbaric isn't it!).

Here is the card I put together over the course of many 10 minute intervals over many days. I just couldn't help myself - I saw her face and this is what popped into my head for a sentiment.

The sentiment is especially perfect considering we are currently without air conditioning the outside temperature peaked at 90 degree fahrenheit and aren't scheduled for a repairman to come until the week of the 23rd.
 
I need some serious uninterrupted Bubble time - just me, my paper, my Copics, and tape gun...in the MUCH cooler temperature of the basement.

Graduation can't get here soon enough!

Stop Hoarding - Just CUT It

I challenged myself to a five prong challenge:

1. No stamping (I didn't feel like coloring tonight)
2. Use an 'old' tool (actually used two favorites - the 'fern' punch and the dotted embossing folder)
3. Use a new tool (the wreath die cut and my almost new - only used once before - blender tool)
4. Use ribbon (just 'cuz I have LOTS of ribbon)
5. Use a piece of hoarded-this-is-too-yummy-to-cut design paper (you'll notice I didn't cut very much of it...) (but in my defense...I cut from TWO (2) coveted pieces of design paper AND had to 'fussy-cut' for placement BOTH times!!)

Tada!!!! I did it!

It'll Quilt Out

I spent yesterday putting a final border on a quilt for my 94 year old mother. She started a Christmas lap quilt and evidently couldn't make herself stop sewing blocks and ended up with queen size quilt. When I was there Monday evening she had the brute on the guest room bed and thought it "needed" a pieced border. So I cut many, many, many 2.5 by 3.5 rectangles (since she is nearly blind - I really don't like it when she grabs a rotary cutter to start chopping fabric so I'm her designated fabric slicer.) In just three days she managed to get the pieced border on. Friday at 8 pm she called me asking if I would come over to piece the back of the quilt. Since I didn't get home until 7 PM and I went into work at 6 AM I asked if morning would be soon enough. Luckily she said yes... and I said I would be there in the morning. I think this is what you could call a quilt emergency! I was tempted to go in my jammie pants but KNEW the day would also include an outing of some sort.

Again we surveyed the quilt top - she announced it needed a solid border too! So...3 hours later the beast had another border and a back pieced and ready to go to the machine quilters tomorrow. She needs to stick to making lap size quilts as she just can't man-handle a queen size quilt. Her sewing skills aren't what they used to be but the Christmas quilt will be a nice addition to her bedspread collection. MY sewing skills aren't what they used to be either. I actually had to call sister Gail to get a reminder on diagonal piecing of borders!

She mentioned that she won't be around to use the quilt. As always I say, "Why?" "Where are you going?" She has been saying "I won't be around to do...." for about 20 years. I just keep asking her the same questions. She usually responds with the same look at me that suggests I am just a bit too puckish for my own good.

By the way the day did include an outing. A trip to the grocery store, lunch, and a visit to Trinity Heights to see if the two trees planted in my father's memory were in bloom yet. While it was a lovely day to go for a short walk among the gardens - nothing is yet in bloom. We will make a return visit in a couple of weeks.

Bobbins and Bubbles

By the way...Bobbins is my 'traveling companion'. He accompanies me and my sisters on our annual sisters' holiday. I will, occasionally, be sharing pictures of him as he partakes in the Three/Fifths Quilting and Shopping Extravaganzas! He is quite the stowaway - getting crammed into a pocket, purse, or camera bag! Sometimes he likes to be a bit of a "Where's Waldo" and hide but he is pretty obvious in this one taken at Little Stitches in Marietta, GA.

Hard to believe the day is nearly done and I only have one card to show for it! That's what happens when you stop to cook, vacuum, do some laundry, and a bit of cleaning! Maybe tomorrow I'll be more card productive.

Yay me! I got my ribbon unpacked. While it hasn't been what I would call FUN moving all my card stuff I have enjoyed rediscovering tools and treasures, bits and bobs. I should have a box marked "scraps of paper too small to save"! I did manage to cull the herd so to speak on several items. Rather than just put things in place I made myself go through every cup, drawer, basket, and box before finding it a new home. There is a trip to the Bargain Center for a deposit in my very near future!

Doorway to Bliss

It's official! My husband and I completely swapped personal spaces. The 'computer cave' is now where my card making room was and 'My Fiber Bubble' is now nearly open for business in what was 'his' space. Or as I also referred to it: the mole hole, the geek cavern, the black hole, deep space zero, the disaster area, the viper's nest, the pigsty, the hurricane hole....do you get the drift?

What you may wonder was the reason for my own version of "Trading Spaces"? I can sum it up in one word. DOOR.

Dear husband's space was previously located in an undefined area adjacent to the family room. The problem with that? The man never met a horizontal surface he could walk by without leaving a deposit of some sort...a tool, a week-old grocery list, a movie stub from daughter Amy's last month visit, a grocery receipt dated March 24, 2009, an empty soda bottle, a computer bit, bite, or bolt, a church program... Not sure if he is a certifiable pack-rat, a close contender for the "Hoarders" reality TV show, or was just born with an especially dominate MAN gene.

He kept sprawling closer and closer to the family room...into my quilting area...across the room to the piano...It was like watching a petri dish colonize a rare, insidious, and potentially lethal, unstoppable bacteria. Ever heard of MRSA?(Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus)? Well this was CRSA (Clean-Resistant Stuff-alococcus Allovertheplacis).

SO! The computer cave is now and forever more contained within a confined space...with a DOOR! The move is actually a win-win situation. I now have my quilting quarters and my card making area all in one space! Dear husband won't have to listen to my frequent diatribes regarding the state of computer clutter, plus the downstairs area is cooler - much more to my liking than his.

I'm still organizing the New and Improved Bubble. I don't like working in a cluttered workspace so I just made myself pretend I don't have a stack of unpacked crates and boxes sitting behind me and forced myself to make a card. I had to take time to challenge myself with not only working in a crazy mess but to use the yummy color challenge over at Play Date Cafe! Plus I used a stamp that I rediscovered during the moving avalanche! A Chunky Foam stamp - remember those?
